This is a reblog of a post I made 1 year ago, but it’s even more relevant now.

Could Star Trek Into Darkness be a reimaging/sequel to Where No Man Has Gone Before with Gary Mitchell?
***STAR TREK SEQUEL VIDEO***
Watch this now! It’s being removed from a lot of sites so I don’t know how long this will be up.
Benedict looks like product of genetic engineering to me!
*Star Trek 2 - Filming*
Gratuitous violence. Hot Cumberbatch on Quinto action. And. Coat porn.
Whoa. He’s strong and a good fighter, could it be Khan???
Star Trek 2 was an exciting prospect in itself, before it bagged one of the most exciting actors of the moment as its villain: yep, Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch…
“The smart money would be on him playing a calculating, hyper-intelligent baddie”
This line from the Total Film article made me think of something. One of the characters mentioned as a possibly for this sequel was Harry Mudd. In TOS he was a bumbling, comic, used car salesman type. What if they re-envisioned him as a genius level super dangerous conman? Benedict Cumberbatch could definitely play that type of Harry Mudd. However, no mustache so it’s just a thought.

Top left is Benedict and Zachary with their stunt doubles?
Benedict is wearing a black Starfleet uniform shirt, so I’m not thinking Khan.
What would we do without Green Screen!?!?
I want to think about this some more. This quote is from an unnamed source, but for this discussion I’m going to assume it is true. So, what else do we know?
The cast -
Everyone of the crew is signed to come back. Including Bruce Greenwood (Captain Pike).
Benedict Cumberbatch playing an unknown role. All we have is a quote from J.J. Abrams; “Who says he’s playing our villain?”
Joseph Gatt playing an unknown role.
They were looking to cast a Hispanic actor.
Anything else -
J.J. Abrams denies the villain is Khan. Fandom and many who claim inside information insist he’s lying.
What I am thinking -
I would love for it to be Khan. However, I think Cumberbatch throws a wrench in the works. First, him playing Khan would be a mistake. A white man playing a genetic superman(Übermensch) and calling himself the superior intellect??? No. He could play Joachim, but I don’t think Cumberbatch would be used in such a minor role. I can only think of one way it could work and it would be awesome, but I can’t see it being done for marketing reasons. Reverse the genders! Pick an actress to play Khan and Cumberbatch would be a male Lt. Marla McGivers. Terrific to think about, but I don’t think it’s much of a possibly.
Alright, let’s go with the quote. First a reboot of “The Devil in the Dark”, with the Horta. Good episode, but it is a fairly small scale story. It would take a hell of a rewrite to make it movie material. No, I think we can dismiss this one.
A reboot of “The Squire of Gothos” with Trelane(Q). Cumberbatch would make a great Trelane. However, it is again a small scale episode and would take a big rewrite. Now I don’t think doing a big rewrite is necessarily bad. In fact I think that is what Abram is planning. Not just a remake with different actors, but a total reboot. I just don’t think there is enough of a “core” in that episode to work with. Besides Trelane is silly.
A reboot of Harry Mudd. I think this is a real possibility. Harry isn’t tied to any one episode, so he could be included in any story, including a new original one. Making this sequel original is something Abrams has said he wanted. Cumberbatch may not be the same physical type as the original, but I can totally see him as a rebooted INTELLIGENT con-man Harcourt Fenton Mudd. This could be it. A way to please classic fans and a new storyline for the modern ones.
A reboot of “Where No Man has Gone Before” with Gary Mitchell. I hope this is a possibility. I can totally see Cumberbatch as Mitchell. The episode is a big idea one and could easily be rewritten to allow more Federation involvement. The problem comes from the other stuff we know. Why a Hispanic actor? Who would Joesph Gatt play? We haven’t heard of a search for a big actress to play Dr Dehner. I like the idea, but I don’t know it fits what we know.
A reboot of “The Cage” or “The Menagerie” with the Talosians. This would be interesting. Cumberbatch as a rebooted Talosian? I can see it, and the head Talosian is not a villain, not really. Joseph Gatt could be one too. The search for a Hispanic actor could be for Commodore Mendez, a major character in “The Menagerie”. Captain Pike is also a major character and they have signed him to the sequel. This one fits what little we know and Spock is the real “Bad” guy, that would kick some ass.
We know so little so this is all just guess work. However, thinking about it I’d say Harcourt Fenton Mudd is my bet, at least at this moment.
Cumberbatch is a vulcan. They should be brothers. Just sayin’.
But see, he actually could be! Because now he’s been cast as the villain in nu!trek there’s always a chance he’ll be Sybok!
Fingers crossed! The more I think about it, the more I’m hoping that there’s going to be some sort of fallout from the destruction of Vulcan… (because seriously JJ, it would be a dick move to ignore it totally) and that Cumberbatch is going to end up cast as some kind of pissed-off vulcan vigilante with a vendetta.
…I’ll stop. Don’t hit me.
I would forgive JJ Abrams for making us wait so long if this happens. I am forcing myself to be restrained and calm, but inside I’m a fangirly mess.
That storyline, a Vulcan driven mad by the destruction of their home-world sounds awesome. However, there is no need for them to be related or to be a reboot of that vulcan-who-must-not-be-named. I like that idea.
However, don’t forget this quote about the reboot sequel:
“It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS (The Original Series) excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.”
Gary Mitchell anyone?
Besides having the greatest name ever, what caused you to cast Benedict Cumberbatch?
ABRAMS: We just were looking for someone with the most awesome name in history. That was the casting call. We asked for someone with the most awesome name in history, ever, and Benedict Cumberbatch showed up, so we were like, “You’re cast!”
What was it that made him your villain?
ABRAMS: Who said he’s our villain?
What made you want to cast him?
ABRAMS: He’s a genius. Honestly, he’s just an incredible actor. If you’ve seen his work in Sherlock, he’s just got incredible skills. He’s an amazing stage actor. He did amazing work (on stage) in Frankenstein. He’s brilliant. You try to cast people who are great. We got lucky.
You know what? If Cumberbatch isn’t the villain, please oh please oh please let him be reboot Sybok.
This is exactly what I’ve been thinking!
Sybok is the worst character EVER! As far I’m concerned Star Trek V is NON-CANON and never happened. GOD even the thought of a Sybok reboot makes me ill.
I have to go lay down for a few minutes. :(
